The source of the COE mapping dataset is the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Region 10. These data represent the Formerly Used Defense Sites (FUDS), a dataset managed by and obtained from the US Army Corps of Engineers, Anchorage, AK. The COE dataset was generated by EPA in May, 1996, and contains 523 sites. Compare to the GIS dataset named FUDS98 (Formerly Used Defense Sites, June 1998).

"The FUDS-GIS was developed for the DERA FUDS Program in Alaska in order to provide an
integrated system for accessing, managing, displaying and analyzing the FUDS database in a
user-friendly format. The FUDS-GIS integrates the existing WES-FUDS database with site
specific analytical and other environmental data obtained by the COE Alaska District and
CRREL. In addition, the FUDS-GIS provides a central point of access to a variety of statewide
remedial efforts."
